What is DME

DME is reusable medical equipment like walkers, wheelchairs, or hospital beds that are prescribed by your physician to use in your home. You can call us directly: 956-246-9737; or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048.

Who Pays for DME

Anyone who has Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) can get DME as long as the equipment is medically necessary. Generally, you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after you pay your Medicare Part B deductible for the year.

s

Will I be Covered

Much depends on the following conditions:
A. Your physician and physical therapist assisting you, as well as your supplier, being diligent about providing the correct documentation to be given to your insurer: Medicare or your Medicare Advantage Plan.
B. Whoever’s funding your DME will review the documentation to determine whether it’s medically necessary, so point A. is extremely important.

s

Who Maintains the Equipment

Expensive DME like electric wheelchairs are supports that need to be maintained. That means you’ll need to maintain it to ensure that it’s operational until the approved replacement period has elapsed; with Medicare that’s between 5-7 years. Most insurers will pay for routine maintenance of these items, so you need to be sure to read the fine print and understand the regulations in this regard.
